CSCS Middle Schoolers Help City with Tree Inventory

During this fall, seventh and eighth grade students embarked on a big job.

Their task?

To catalog as many trees in the South Waterfront as possible. They learned how to use dichotomous keys to identify the trees, and then collected standard measurements of the trees for the City. Prior to our students’ work, these trees had not been cataloged by the City. Our students presented their data on over 160 trees to a member of the Urban Forestry Department of the City. Next they will be presenting their findings at a local conference this spring.

Wow!

Seventh grade students assess a South Waterfront street tree before taking measurements.
