Fieldwork Coordinator Update September 2016

Autumn is here and fieldwork is about to go into full swing at Southwest Charter. Below is an overview of school-wide curricular units and related fieldwork this fall trimester.

 

Kindergartens: Farming

Zenger Farms is SE Portland

Lee Farms in Tualatin  

Old McDonald’s Farm in Corbett

Franz Bakery in-school visit

Harvesting wheat from Galen’s Way garden on the campus of National University of Natural Medicine

 

1st and 2nd Grades: Gardening

Two visits to Zenger Farms in SE Portland (followed by two more later this year)

Multiple visits to South Waterfront Community Garden where they are maintaining two plots

Stone Soup Celebration with community garden members and reading buddies at Mirabella

Possible tour of a food pantry

 

3rd Grade: Oregon’s Geologic Past

Elk Rock Island Park

OMSI in-school presentation

Two visits to Rice Museum of Rocks and Minerals

 

4th and 5th Grade: Watersheds and the Water Cycle

Tryon Creek State Park

The headwaters of Tryon Creek, tour led by Bureau of Environmental Services  

The confluence of Tryon Creek and the Willamette, tour led by Tryon Creek Watershed Council Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria  

Bureau of Environmental Services in-school visit

 

6th Grade: Identity and Human Body

Oregon Zoo

OHSU primate center in Beaverton

Oregon Historical Society

In-class visits from experts in the medical community

 

7th and 8th Grade: Portland’s Water System

Bull Run Reservoir in Corbett

Powell Butte in SE Portland

Wastewater treatment facility in N Portland

Portland Water Bureau Operations Facility in N Portland

Mercy Corps Action Center in downtown Portland

Bureau of Environmental Services in-school visit

Planning a community Water fair in December

 

Plus, each class will visit their Adopt-a-Place site two times this trimester. One of these visits will focus on restoration service work.
